25 June 2006 - front yard
Tickseed - the only true red flowers in my garden.
The red hot poker plant continues to show off its blooms.
The following three photos show the prickly pear blooms as they opened up this morning.
In September 2004, I dug up the sod covering the front yard using a pick axe. Then, I covered the dirt with newspaper (a biodegradeable weed barrier) and a thick layer of bark mulch. Finally, I planted a few xeric shrubs, prayed that they would survive the winter and hoped for the best. In 2005, I planted scores of plants - most purchased from High Country Gardens, some generous gifts from gardening friends. In 2006, I added the stepping stones on the left (made from recycled tires), a few shrubs and, in the fall, scores of bulbs - mainly daffodils and allium. In 2007, I realized that I am running out of space and added only a few plants. Mature perennials are large - my garden is getting crowded!
